Why don't people believe that I am not mixed or 'biracial'?

I am a black girl but I'm light skinned... Everyone at my school says that I'm not black, I'm mixed. Some of them say that beyonce is mixed too when she's clearly black. Is it true that if you have lighter skin you are considered 'mixed'?
