Problems with the Gmail extension for Chrome?

I have the gmail extra on my chrome on my desktop, and I really like how it works, but then I installed it on my new laptop and it doesn't work the same. On my desktop if I click the little red gmail envelope it drops down a menu showing my most recent new emails, but it doesn't do this on my laptop. Am I missing a setting somewhere, or did I install the wrong extension?
